Hatley Mosquito MM578

Royal Air Force Badge

Location: Cockayne Hatley, 31st March, 1944

Pilot: F/Lt George Edward Hill RAF
Navigator: P/O WG Allen DFM RAFVR

De Havilland Mosquito.

The aircraft, designation MM578 of 13 Maintenance Unit, lost a wing whilst diving during a test flight and crashed near the village killing both its occupants. There are suggestions it was involved in a mock dog fight with an American B17 at the time.

I recently received an e-mail from a guy called Ross, who is Director of Engineering and Airframe Compliance involved in a project entitled "The People's Mosquito", intending to restore/build Mosquito "RL249" to flight-worthy status. The link to his site will display some stunning images of a de Havilland Mosquito and I strongly urge anyone with the slightest interest in this incredible aircraft to visit it. You may even be tempted to join and support it! www.peoplesmosquito.org.uk/
