Raikkonen collided with Occon on the first lap and emerged from the pits in last position. Sebastien controlled the race perfectly, until a safety car allowed Bottas to take the lead. A daring move by Sebastien at the first corner restart just over-cooked it, and both Mercedes and Raikkonen passed him, with Bottas comfortably holding off Lewis. The two Red Bull drivers took each other off by colliding at turn 1. With just three laps to go, Bottas ran over some debris on the main straight and had a rear tyre puncture which put him out of the race, and allowed Lewis through for his first race win at this circuit, and in this 2018 season. Sebastien ran off the track on lap 53 whilst leading and was out of the race. Kimi pitted for new tyres letting Lewis through, and he held the lead for the rest of the race.
